Taqueria El Gallo Azteca

MÉXICO 🇲🇽

I must have walked by this busy corner spot dozens of times before finally walking inside. I always noted to myself that I should go, but on those days a Sri Lankan restaurant further up the hill or something else was the destination. I knew somehow that the Aztec Rooster would be there the next time, just as it has been since I've been coming to Staten Island.

The immediate neighborhood around it has been changing though, tilting more and more Mexican over time. Quite a few restaurants, taquerias, and groceries have moved into spots in this four block span. After a lunch in further parts, I spent part of the afternoon in the one of them that had a license to sell beer and enjoyed some Champions League while getting hungry enough to eat again. Two more blocks down the hill, Port Richmond's popular Tortilleria Oaxaca has moved into a second location making tortillas for nearby businesses.

The whole stretch lends itself well to a brief foray from the ferry terminal, which is just a little more than a kilometer away.

The first thing that caught my eye here was the house special taco azteca ($3.50, above), a creation made of steak, cactus, and cooked onions. It is almost too large for its tortillas, which are better than average and griddled back to life nicely. The green avocado salsa it comes with adds a nice kick and some necessary juices to the mixture.

Taqueria El Gallo Azteca also serves a normal range of antojitos including a focus on tortas and large tacos.
