Indonesian Food Bazaar

Keep an eye out for the sensational Indonesian food bazaar at Masjid Al-Hikmah in Astoria, which takes place in warmer months, about once a month. I've tried to go at least once a year since I found out about this gem a few years back.

Even if you do not have an appetite, it is a fun event to stop at. Everyone is very friendly and more than willing to tell you about their food, with no pressure to buy. It's like a backyard barbecue of friends and family. I made my rounds two weekends ago, and here are some scenes from that and past events:

  1. Do you know when the July 2011 bazaar is? It would be a public service if you could post it, because the Mosque does not seem to return phone calls or emails, and the info (if on the web anywhere) is well hidden....

  2. If I am not mistaken, this usually takes place on the first Sunday of every month during warm months. Show up around noon and all the food will be ready (any earlier sometimes leads to seeing booths still setting up), but not too late in the afternoon, as they only bring so much.

  3. I finally managed to reach them on the phone today. A woman told me it's July 17th this time (probably because the first Sunday would fall on July 4th weekend) and there is no August one because they will be fasting. But your rule of thumb may well be true for May and June. Cheers, and happy eating, y'all.

  4. We were excited about the latest Greenmarket to hit Long Island City, however, we were totally unaware that the Indonesian Food Bazaar existed in Astoria prior. We definitely have to give the bazaar a go before the summer is over. Best be sure that we will bring our appetite along for the trip!
