New Asha Sri Lankan Restaurant

SRI LANKA ðŸ‡±ðŸ‡°

[UPDATE OCTOBER 2015]
For the 15 years I have lived in New York City, New Asha has been going strong, with basically the same look and feel as then. The only noticeable change is that the deli next door has had its interior connection cut off, and no longer carries the Sri Lankan products that made it a good wander while waiting for your order. These groceries are now available at a place across the street.

The proprietor is lovely and will make myriad recommendations and prepare everything with care. She has a framed writeup from basically every publication in town, all deserved.

On the display case on the left side of the counter live a few goodies that are all worth trying. Below are the dhal vada ($1, left), a crispy lentil cake, and fish roti ($1.75, right), a self-explanatory deliciousness.

I usually come here and ask what is good from the steam table and talk her into combining as much as possible onto one plate. The fish curry, goat curry, and lentils below over rice all came to $12.50. It went most of the way in feeding two people. For her curry, she uses kingfish, which almost has the density of steak. The goat meat does not hide itself in the curry flavor, and the lentils add a creamy base for scoops of the basmati rice.

New Asha, since 2000, has had my vote for the city's strongest Sri Lankan kitchen. It also remains a thoroughly enjoyable place to have a casual and affordable filling meal, and is about a 15 minute uphill walk from the ferry terminal.
